7 Questions to Ask Marketing Candidates

Cody Johnson, Recruiting Connection

You’re a great marketing leader. You’ve created a top team and carefully cultivated a culture of success. When the time comes to bring in another member of your team, it’s important to get it right. The resume is the port-of-entry, but the interview is where you really get to know the person behind the paper. Inspired questions are a powerful way to ensure you get the best candidate on your team. Next time you are in an interview, ask your marketing candidates these 7 questions.

1. What makes you most passionate about this work?

Why did the candidate choose marketing as a career? This question dives into the motivation of the candidate. It gives you an idea of why the candidate gets out of bed every day and how passionate they will be about working for your company.

2. How has your skillset grown over time?

Marketing is a field that requires a love of learning and the development of one’s skills. The way the candidate answers this question tells you about the candidate’s self-awareness. It gives them a chance to tell their story and show how they have grown over time.

3. Tell me about a time where you had to learn on the job.

No one knows everything. The ability to learn on the job is a must for any candidate that you are going to hire. Tell them to give you an example of a time they had to learn and adapt on the job. A fast and willing learner will be a great asset to your team.

4. In your own words, what’s the goal of marketing?

How well does a candidate understand their role in business? Ask them what marketing means to them.

5. What can you tell me about our company?

The answer to this question shows how much a candidate really cares about this opportunity. Did they do their homework and come prepared? A follow up to this question could be: Why did you apply for this job?

6. Tell me about your most successful campaign or project you’ve worked on.

Give the candidate a chance to impress you. This question builds up a candidate’s confidence and can help them open up.

7. When a campaign or project fails, how do you respond?

Not every project will be a huge success, and the ability to learn and fix mistakes after a failed campaign is vital. A great marketer will look at the data and find out where things went wrong. Then, more importantly, they will use that data to improve the success of the next campaign.
