Top Software Companies in Utah: Hiring Trends & Industry Outlook

Cody Johnson, Recruiting Connection

📝 Key Takeaways

The top software companies in Utah cluster in Lehi and Salt Lake County, and they set the pay and hiring terms for everyone competing for engineers.

  • Senior technical pay runs roughly $135,000 to $215,000 in Utah
  • Entry-level applicants are plentiful; senior engineers rarely apply
  • AI skills now appear in most tech postings and raise pay
  • Tech hiring is growing outside the tech sector itself

If you’re hiring an engineer at one of the software companies in Utah, or competing against one for talent, you’re up against some of the fastest-growing tech employers in the country. A mid-sized company in Salt Lake County posting a senior developer role competes with Lehi SaaS firms, public software companies in American Fork, and remote offers from out of state.

Utah’s job market is still outpacing the nation’s, but hiring in the information sector has slowed, which makes the companies still adding engineers worth watching.

Knowing which software companies in Utah are hiring, which roles they’re filling, and what they publish in pay gives you a benchmark for your own openings. It also tells you who you’re really competing against when a strong candidate has more than one offer.

This guide profiles 15 of the top software companies in Utah, including the types of technical roles each hires for and the pay ranges they’ve published. Many Utah postings don’t list pay, and entries note where that’s the case. Later sections cover the sector’s growth, compensation benchmarks and talent shortages, and how smaller firms can compete for local talent.

Utah’s Software Hiring Market

Where Utah’s software job growth stands

Utah’s overall job market is still growing faster than the nation’s. According to the Utah Department of Workforce Services, the state added 20,600 jobs in the 12 months through August 2026, a 1.2% gain. Unemployment sat at 3.5%, against 4.1% nationally.

Tech hasn’t kept pace. The information sector, which includes software publishers, lost 2,300 jobs over the same period, and it has posted year-over-year losses in every monthly DWS report of 2026.

The national picture points to a modest recovery. CompTIA projects net tech employment to grow 1.9% in 2026 after a 0.3% decline in 2025, with much of that demand concentrated in AI. The same report counted nearly 275,000 active job postings for AI skills in January 2026 alone.

The talent pool is deep at entry level

Utah’s pipeline of new graduates is strong. The state’s public colleges and universities awarded a record 71,262 certificates and degrees to 61,265 graduates in 2025, a 26% increase in awards since 2021, according to the Utah System of Higher Education.

Experienced workers are a different story. The state’s chief economist has noted that Utah’s prime-age workforce is employed at very high rates. DWS has also flagged a declining labor force participation rate in its May 2026 report.

Competition centers on senior and AI talent

The hiring slowdown has fallen hardest on people just entering the workforce, so junior roles tend to draw plenty of applicants. Fewer companies are hiring broadly, and those that are hiring are usually looking for specific, often senior or AI-focused, skill sets.

Those candidates are usually already employed, often at the companies profiled above. Filling a senior engineering, engineering management, or AI role typically means recruiting people who aren’t actively looking.

Hiring Trends Shaping Utah Software Hiring in 2026

1. AI skills have moved into most tech roles

AI has gone from a specialty to a standard requirement in under three years. According to Dice, the share of tech job postings asking for at least one AI skill rose from 15% in January 2024 to 73% in May 2026.

That demand isn’t limited to AI engineering titles. Employers are adding AI skills to software development, data, cybersecurity, and infrastructure roles, so AI fluency is becoming part of existing technical jobs rather than a separate career path.

Posting volume is still climbing. CompTIA counted more than 320,000 active job postings requiring AI skills in August 2026, up 4.5% from July. Dice’s latest data shows AI and machine learning postings grew 101% year over year in August 2026, more than five times the 18% growth in tech postings overall.

2. Tech hiring is shifting outside the tech sector

Tech jobs and tech companies are moving in opposite directions. In August 2026, tech occupation employment across all industries grew by 86,000 workers, while tech companies themselves cut about 14,700 positions, according to CompTIA’s analysis of BLS data.

Layoffs at tech firms have been heavy this year. Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that the technology sector announced 149,023 job cuts through July 2026, 31% of all cuts announced nationally. AI was the leading stated reason for cuts that month, for the fifth month in a row.

The new openings are coming from elsewhere. Professional and technical services, manufacturing, and administrative support services generated the most new tech job postings in August. Dice reported that tech postings in finance and banking grew 47% year over year. For Utah employers, that means a fintech firm or a manufacturer is now competing for the same engineers as the software companies profiled above.

3. AI skills carry a measurable pay premium

Employers are paying more for AI experience. PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, which analyzed job ads across 27 countries, puts the average wage premium for AI skills at 62%, up from 57% the year before. The premium ranges widely by industry, from as high as 118% in consumer markets to 16% in government.

U.S. tech postings show the same pattern at a smaller scale. From January through May 2026, AI and machine learning roles offered median salaries 22% higher than the broader tech market, according to Dice. For a hiring manager, that gap usually shows up as an offer that looked competitive on paper but loses to a company paying for AI experience.

4. Employers want fewer skills and more experience

Job postings are getting narrower and deeper. Revelio Labs analyzed 75 million tech postings and found the average number of skills listed fell about 25%, from 30 to 21, since 2024. Over the same period, required years of experience for those skills rose about 4%.

The shift favors specialists over generalists. Demand has moved away from broad skill categories like general software development and toward specific ones, such as Java API development.

The same pressure reaches entry-level roles. PwC’s analysis of 2.4 million U.S. entry-level jobs found that those most exposed to AI are now seven times more likely to require skills traditionally expected of senior staff, such as leadership and creativity.

5. Entry-level tech hiring has contracted

Fewer junior roles are being posted. Revelio Labs data shows U.S. entry-level job postings have fallen about 35% since early 2023.

Recent graduates in computing fields feel it most. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s latest data by major, based on 2024 Census data, puts unemployment for recent computer science graduates at 7.0% and for computer engineering graduates at 7.8%, compared with 4.2% across all majors. For employers, that means entry-level candidates are plentiful, and screening, not sourcing, is usually the harder part of filling a junior role.

6. Cybersecurity faces a skills gap more than a headcount gap

Security teams report that the right skills are harder to find than extra people. In ISC2’s 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study of more than 16,000 professionals, 59% reported critical or significant skills needs, up from 44% in 2024.

AI again sits at the top of the list. Respondents named AI (41%) and cloud security (36%) as their most pressing technical shortages. ISC2 also dropped its long-running workforce gap estimate this year because respondents ranked skills above headcount as the bigger problem.

7. Upskilling is now part of the hiring plan

Many employers are pairing new hires with training for the people they already have. In the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, 77% of employers said they plan to upskill their workforce. Nearly 40% of the skills required on the job are expected to change by 2030, and 63% of employers already cite the skills gap as their main barrier to transformation.

For most companies, the practical question is which roles to fill from outside and which to build internally. Senior and specialized roles, where the skills gap is widest, are usually the ones that go to an external search.

Competing With Utah’s Top Software Companies

The companies on this list set the terms for Utah’s tech hiring market. The practical question for most employers is which roles they can fill through postings and which need a targeted search. Junior roles usually draw plenty of applicants. Senior engineers and AI specialists are typically already employed and weighing several offers.
