Assistant Controller Job Description
The Assistant Controller in Utah manages the accounting team's daily operations, keeps close deadlines from slipping, reviews journal entries and reconciliations, and prepares or reviews financial statements. They work closely with the Controller on process improvements, staff development, and complex technical accounting questions. What to Look For in a Utah Assistant Controller
- CPA preferred or actively pursuing. Public accounting background is a strong indicator.
- 3 to 6 years of accounting experience including some supervisory responsibility
- Strong close process knowledge and reconciliation depth
- ERP proficiency: NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or QuickBooks Enterprise
- Technical accounting competence: ASC 606, ASC 842, and GAAP generally

Most Assistant Controllers in Utah are 2 to 4 years from taking a Controller role. The job builds close management, team leadership, and technical accounting depth. Some get promoted at their current company. Others move to a smaller company where they can take the top accounting seat immediately.
Strongly preferred. Active CPA candidates who have passed exam sections but not yet completed the experience requirement are often strong fits. If the role includes audit coordination or complex technical accounting, a CPA becomes a harder requirement.
